THIS PAGE HAS BEEN ACTIVATED AS THE NEW STATESMAN BLOG IS NOW CLOSED FOR COMMENTS
At 10am this morning, the New Statesman finally closed the Mark Lynas thread on their website after 1715 comments had been added over a period of five months. I don’t know whether this constitutes any kind of a record, but gratitude is certainly due to the editor of of the New Statesman for hosting the discussion so patiently and also for publishing articles from Dr David Whitehouse and Mark Lynas that have created so much interest.
This page is now live, and anyone who would like to continue the discussion here is welcome to do so. I have copied the most recent contributions at the New Statesman as the first comment for the sake of convenience. If you want to refer back to either of the original threads, then you can find them here:
Dr David Whitehouse’s article can be found here with all 1289 comments.
Mark Lynas’ attempted refutation can be found here with 1715 comments.
Welcome to Harmless Sky, and happy blogging.

Welcome nefastus!
Thank you for joining us…….hope you hang around for awhile.
Now……..will you please post something coherent?
BRUT Now……..will you please post something coherent?
Ah….
Lets see
I am told that the average home swimming pool contains around 70 m^3 of water, so a good, healthy p— of 150 cc would represent a bit more than 2 ppm in the pool (a rather insignificant amount, as we both can probably agree).
You’re pissing in my pool so why should I not reciprocate ?
Wake up Brute
Are you there ?
Ahhhhhhh
Wake up Brute
Are you there ?
Splish splosh
Nefastus,
Shhhhhhhhhh…..
The adults are talking now!
TonyN,
Are all British children such as Nestafus, this unruly and devoid of decorum? I thought the British were notoriously polite and well-mannered…..even as youngsters.
This latest example, brought to us by way of Nefastus, demonstrates the failings of the educational system. The rambling, incoherent gibberish is a prime examples of the ravages of illicit drug use among the youth………
Shockingly appalling…………
Are all prepubescent reprobates such as Nefastus permitted access to the Internet in England?
Hey Brute,
We have freedom of speech on this and other blog sites, even for foul-mouthed adolescents like nefastus.
If they get too far out of line the site moderator (TonyN) will flush their verbal garbage down the drain, but otherwise, the best thing is just to ignore these ill-mannered, childish twirps and continue our sometimes heated but usually well-mannered debate with a real grown-up, like Peter.
Max
Max,
Hmmmmmm……..
No idiotic response yet, his “Mum” must have tucked him in for the night……..either that, or he’s still thumbing through the dictionary trying to find out what the word “prepubescent” means.
Makes me sorry for welcoming him now……. A colossal intellect Alarmist from the Guardian site, yes?
Hey Max,
You’ve made the “front page” over @ Watts Up With That.
Good job.

Brute,
The bad thing about aggressive, immature and illogical pro-AGW bloggers is that they have no real contribution to make to the ongoing debate surrounding the AGW question, so that spending much time debating with them is actually a waste of time.
The good thing about aggressive, immature and illogical pro-AGW bloggers is that they have no real contribution to make to the ongoing debate surrounding the AGW question and thereby weaken the pro-AGW cause, so that an interested but as yet undecided observer can see how weak their logic really is.
The whole silly exchange on the Guardian site regarding the US Navy submarine photo with onthefence and MeFinny2 both attempting to use this issue to discredit Anthony Watts pointed out very clearly how weak the arguments of these clowns really are.
Peter (and other mature proponents of the premise that AGW is a real and serious threat) should be upset with guys like this, because they give the AGW movement a bad name.
There may be chowderheads like this in the other camp, but, so far, I have not seen them on the blog sites I have visited.
Max
So Brute, et al, still no actual science ?
From such a weak stance.
Hi Brute
Thanks for link to Watts site with Monbiot admitting he “boobed”.
Looks like Monbiot should have spent a bit more than “26 seconds” in getting his data together to try to trash Christopher Booker.
A quick shot from the hip can end up being a shot in the foot. Ouch!
Regards,
Max
Hey Nefastus,
Hasn’t your Mommy wiped your nose and tucked you in for beddy-bye yet?
You can always come back tomorrow and join the big boys to talk AGW and other serious stuff but it’s nighty-night time for the younger set now.
G’night
Max

Pouring cold water on global warming
Global cooling has arrived. Global warming is dead.

Oooooo

worthless though
do you think it is in anyway comforting to you ? >
nefastus: Please read the blog rules before posting again, and don’t try posting using other contributor’s names, TonyN
TonyN,
I know that you welcome both sides of the argument and probably I push the boundaries at times but I think your scissors are called for with some of the preceding comments.
Brute,
If I remember rightly, you first mentioned your church in connection with them shipping chickens to Haiti and the Haitians ate them. Who hasn’t eaten chicken? But anyway, I thought you guys were meant to be quite open and proclaim your beliefs loud and clear.
In Australia and Europe its not usually the done thing to enquire too deeply about religious beliefs but I’ve always found that Americans tend to be more open about it, especially when on their home soil and will ask you in the way of polite conversation in the same way as an English person might ask you which football team you support.
Whenever I’ve been there its always been on business so to avoid any controversy I used to just mumble something about being a lapsed Anglican.
So I’m surprised that you feel offended by a straightforward question of which church you were referring to.
Anyway back to those ads. I found out that they use a slogan ‘You call it pollution, we call it life’. Very good. But you’ve never heard it? You must lead a very sheltered life. They are made by some mob called the Competitive Enterprise Institute. What do you know about them?
Are they some left wing front do you think? They can’t be big business because you’ve said that its them who are behind the AGW scam.
Peter Martin, you wrote in part to TonyN in your 6244:
Good on you Pete, I thought you might be embarrassed by the above extremes, which are in some cases unintelligible to me.
I suspect that they all originate from Nefustas, but there is a new Guardianite with a very similar style; Sourpuss69. The amazing thing is that he may well be about 40 years of age with a birthday of 1969. Initially, I was wondering if 69 was his own estimate of his IQ, but if so, it is grossly over-estimated, so I now guess his birthday was ‘69.

Please see #6243
just to let you know that “alter egos” out there, like max’s ego, manacker’s ego, manacker’s echo or nefester are not from me.
It is probably easy enough to distinguish these messages from mine, since they lack any substance and appear to be the howls of a slightly deranged adolescent.
Max
Brute,
Thanks for posting the “science” charts.
nefastus may not be impressed, since he/she/or it may have difficulty understanding things that are quite that technical, particularly if they go against nefastus’ mantra.
In summary, the charts show that:
– The ocean has been cooling since 2003 (when the Argo measurement system was started)
– Maximum temperatures recorded in U.S. states were highest in 1930s, followed by 1950s, 1910s, 1980s and 1990s, with lowest period in 2000s
– Arctic sea ice extent is recovering from a low in 2007 and appears to be approaching the long-term mean value
– Global trend of tropospheric temperature was flat until around 1990, rose slightly from 1990 to around 2003 and has dropped sharply since then, back to its starting point in 1979
– IPCC global temperature forecasts all show an increasing trend, even the no added CO2 “commit” curve; the actual 21st century trend (Hadley plus UAH) shows a sharp decline
– The natural greenhouse effect is dominated (95%) by water vapor. CO2 is responsible for the remainder, of which human CO2 emissions are responsible for 0.28%
– Global temperature was slightly lower when Hansen made his recent testimony (2008) than it was 20 years earlier, when he made his first testimony (1988)
While none of these charts provides conclusive evidence that AGW is not real, they do represent “nails in the coffin” of the premise that AGW is a serious threat, as suggested by IPCC, James E. Hansen, etc.

Max

I see from the Guardian web site that I am thought to be one of the organisers of Harmless Sky and we jointly collaborated in sending you into the site to argue our case. Apparently all this can be gauged as I posted a link regarding twilight at the North Pole.
In case any of them are reading this I am not an organiser and the reason Max posted without any direct intervention from me is because;
a) he was the one already involved in the discussion before I was even aware of it.
b) he has more patience to deal with nit picking taken to an absurd degree (see his duels here with with Peter regarding Global temperatures to 1850)
c) After some initial interest in the subject of the submartine I decided I had much better things to do than try to keep up with an increasingly bizarre thread. It descended into questioning the veracity of a photo where some posters seemed to have difficulty in knowing the difference between pitch darkness and strong twilight only days before the sun becomes visible 24 hours a day.
The episode only serves to confirm that some irrationalists are much better than sceptics at concocting conspiracy theories as it appears the photo is thought to be staged. Or inaccurate. Or taken on the wrong date. Or something.
The point of the original thread was concerning Georges claim that Booker had got it wrong. George was wrong and admitted one of his mistakes. Credit to him for that. His followers then tried to divert attention away from the basic subject and some of them only managed to make themselves look foolish in the subsequent chatter, which ironically then drew the attention of WUWT.
You are either a masochist in putting yourself through all that, or you must hope you will have a sensible discussion. Good luck if its the latter-it seems as if a couple of them have got interesting things to say, but their worthwhile and reasoned points are being drowned by the sound of shouting.
